whats your border

Thanks to the votes from our readers we can now proudly present the winners of our First Annual What’s Your Border Photo Contest.

Congratulations to:

First Place: Manuela Alejandra Gomez

Second Place: Rosa Silva

Third Place: Salvador Guerrero

We want to thank all the student journalists that shared with us their their vision of “border” through the lens of digital photography.

    First Place Winner:

    Manuela Alejandra Gomez

Manuela Alejandra Gomez: I am my border. I am the limit of how far I can reach out and help. I separate ideals from reality without realizing that ultimately there is no passport to cross into the lives of others in need. These are the people of my border waiting and hoping that someday there are no lines between us.

    Second Place Winner:

    By Rosa Silva

Rosa Silva: Dealing with death of a close friend has been my border because I am still unable to accept that we cannot be in contact anymore. Even though I know he is in a better place, he was taken away from me without a proper goodbye. In this photograph, my border represents my dealing with the lack of closure with a true friend that had a heart that he shared with everybody.

    Third Place Winner:

    By Salvador Guerrero

Salvador Guerrero: When I first learned of the contest I wasn't quite sure what my border is. I took hundreds of pictures of what I felt could possibly be it for me but nothing felt right. It was not until my very good friend J. S. died on November 2009 did I realize his death was my border. His memory will live on in my life forever but I will no longer be able to see him again, I am forced to see his life only through my memory and for me this is My Border.
