Recovery efforts continue in NM at the site of the Little Bear Forest fire

LINCOLN NATIONAL FOREST, NM – The Little Bear Forest fire started with a lightning strike on June 4th, consumed more than 43, 000 acres and destroyed 254 residential and commercial structures. It also brought together people from around the nation and within the community to help those families devastated by the loss of home and property. The homes that were destroyed by the fire consisted of a collection of permanent residences and summer homes, but no matter what type of structure they were, the owners and leasers have lost a important part of themselves. For many it was impossible to save family heirlooms and mementos from the fire. “We live in Albuquerque,” said Christine Moore whose family shared her childhood home as a summer home, “so we didn’t know anything about it till early the next morning.”

With many people affected adversely by the fire there has been an outpouring of support and generosity from within the Ruidoso community as well as from outlying communities such as Las Cruces and Albuquerque.

MESILLA, NM – Mesilla Plaza near Las Cruces, New Mexico, observed Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Sunday, October 30, with some 50 altars, each one lovingly assembled with mementos  by relatives of the dead to honor and remember their loved ones.

EL PASO – Show anyone, even a child, a few Picasso prints and they will be able to identify other Picasso’s from an array of artistic prints that include him. There’s something about a Picasso that makes it iconic, memorable. I would put Georgia O’Keefe in that category as well.  Art historians can identify works by almost any known artist, but it takes years of study and some memorization to acquire that skill. If we had to pick a fiction writer who was identifiable by someone outside the field, would it be Steinbeck, James Joyce, or someone else?

Aparece narco mensaje en Anthony, Nuevo México

ANTHONY, N.M. — La Oficina del Sheriff convocó, ayer, a la comunidad de El Paso a mantener la calma luego de que cadenas locales de televisión advirtieran sobre la presencia de un “narco mensaje” en la comunidad de Anthony, Nuevo México. De igual forma solicitó la cooperación de los medios para no infundir el terror, “ni querer conectar cada incidente aquí con lo que sucede en México”. El hecho, también desató sentimientos encontrados entre los citadinos, quienes por un lado confesaron temor, y por el otro, ignoraron la narco-advertencia. Y es que, según versiones de KFOX (canal 14), varias agencias policiales neomexiquenses investigan un paquete sospechoso que apareció el pasado miércoles, 25 de agosto, en la localidad de Anthony. De acuerdo a la televisora, el jefe de la Policía (de aquella demarcación) Ed Miranda, confirmó que una bolsa negra de basura fue encontrada en un estacionamiento con carne animal en su interior y con una nota adjunta tipo “narco”.
