EL PASO — Blame the turmoil overseas with protestors and rulers at war with each other for the rising gas prices we see here in the United States.

Within a matter of days, the average price for regular gas jumped from $3.19 per gallon, to $3.50 per gallon, and those prices are expected to rise again by the start of the summer season.

So how can students buy gas without going broke?

Here are a few ways to prevail for those who must brave through this dark time.

One of the most obvious choices when it comes to saving gas is carpooling. Whether you are going out for a night on the town or heading to class, the best bet is to travel together. And if everyone takes turns every week, there’s no need to pitch in a few bucks for the ride. Compare schedules with friends, meet up, and work together.

Another obvious choice for those who love to exercise or aren’t traveling very far is to invest in a bicycle. Not only will you work on your cardio, but also you won’t have to pull out your wallet every week or two to fill up your tank.

Can’t afford a bike? Take the bus. There are certain routes in El Paso that will take you wherever you need to go, including an express route to UTEP. For times and schedules, check out: http://www.elpasotexas.gov/sunmetro/sunroute.asp

For those who have smart phones, there are plenty of applications you can download that show hotspots for the cheapest gas in the city. Apps like Gas Buddy, Cheap Gas, Gas Book, Fuel Finder, and My Gas Wars all show prices for gas around the city and where they are located, so you can fill up for less.

An interesting website is also available for those willing to invest in it. www.GiftCardGranny.com is a new website where people can buy gift cards for less, saving anywhere from 0.7 – 20% on vendors like Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, and other places that provide fuel for your gas guzzler.

One of the best solutions to this gas crisis is to stay home! There is nothing wrong with kicking back, watching a movie or playing video games with a few pals or your significant other.

Use your money wisely, and work together with others when you travel.

Make sure your car is in tip-top shape, with a good oil change, full tires, and don’t forget to watch that gas meter.

Make the best of these quick tips, and you’re sure to save during this very expensive time in our lives.
